Pain without the added struggle

The Two Arrows Teaching

What is the difference between unavoidable pain and self-created suffering?

Direct Answer: The first arrow is the painful feeling already present. The second is the added resistance, proliferation, and identity story that can sometimes be released.

Fuller teaching

SN 36.6 does not say pain is imaginary or blame a person for suffering. It trains discernment between a felt event and the reactions that multiply distress.

The useful pivot is feeling tone: before reaction hardens into craving or aversion, one can know unpleasantness as unpleasantness and respond with care.
