The Five Hindrances and Their Antidotes

What should I do when desire, aversion, dullness, restlessness, or doubt interrupts meditation?

Direct Answer: Recognize the hindrance as a conditioned state, learn what feeds it, and apply a fitting response without turning the state into a personal failure.

Fuller teaching

The five hindrances are sense desire, ill will, sloth-and-torpor, restlessness-and-remorse, and skeptical doubt. They obscure clarity in different ways, so one universal act of force is rarely helpful.

A practical response begins with recognition. Sense desire benefits from simplicity; ill will from kindness; dullness from energy and light; restlessness from calming and embodiment; doubt from careful inquiry and a manageable next step.
