Five responses without suppression

Intrusive Thoughts in Meditation

How can I meet persistent or unwanted thoughts during meditation?

Direct Answer: Do not treat every thought as a command or identity. MN 20 presents a graduated set of responses, beginning gently and becoming firmer only when needed.

1. Acknowledge → 2. Replace → 3. Disengage → 4. Settle

Fuller teaching

The sequence moves from replacing an unskillful theme, to seeing its drawbacks, redirecting attention, calming the activity that constructs the thought, and finally applying firm resolve. These are options, not a demand to win a fight with the mind.

If thoughts involve risk of harm, severe distress, or impaired functioning, contemplative practice is not a substitute for qualified mental-health support.
