The Severed Burden — Seeing the Danger in the Seed
Method 2: Forward-Looking Causal Analysis, Hiri, and Ottappa
Just as a youth fond of ornaments would be horrified, humiliated, and disgusted to have the carcass of a snake, a dog, or a human hung around their neck... Majjhima Nikāya 20 (Vitakkasaṇṭhāna Sutta §3)
When stubborn obsessions resist gentle substitution, awaken discrimination through causal consequence (ādīnava). Seeing unwholesome loops as a bloated carcass hung around your neck breaks their seductive spell through innate dignity (hiri) and moral dread (ottappa).
Core Insight
When I see the poison in the fruit, my hand drops it willingly without a struggle.
Contemplative practices
- The Fast-Forward Causal Protocol: When an obsession loops: 1. Intercept the hook; 2. Project forward 10 minutes, 10 days, and 10 years; 3. Feel the somatic cost in your chest and jaw; 4. Sever the knot by dropping the dead weight.
- The Spotless White Shoes Reflection: Call up Hiri: remember that your mind is a sanctuary of awakening. Like wearing clean shoes, intuitively decline to step into muddy gossip, spite, or deceit.
Journal reflection
Reflect on a recurring grievance or forbidden fantasy that your mind romanticizes. Run the fast-forward film: where does dwelling on this truly lead? How does its allure collapse when you see its rotting fruit?
