The Three Craving Roots & Inner Fires

Taṇhā & Kilesa

Craving ($Taṇhā$) manifests in three distinct psychological drives powered by the three root fires ($Kilesas$). Understanding how they operate frees you from their compulsive control.

Plain-English key

The mind can burn with three kinds of heat: 1. Greed ($Lobha$) is trying to pull everything in; 2. Aversion ($Dosa$) is trying to push everything away; and 3. Delusion ($Moha$) is not seeing what is actually happening. When you stop feeding fuel to these three fires, the heart cools into natural peace ($Nibbāna$).

Traveler, observe how craving ($Taṇhā$) constantly tricks the mind with three false promises.

Sensual Craving ($Kāma-taṇhā$) promises that buying one more item, eating one more treat, or chasing one more pleasure will finally satisfy you forever. But pleasure is fleeting, and the thirst soon returns.

Becoming Craving ($Bhava-taṇhā$) promises that achieving higher status, winning arguments, or defending your ego-image will bring lasting security. It fuels the fire of Greed ($Lobha$) and Pride.

Annihilation Craving ($Vibhava-taṇhā$) is the angry urge to reject, deny, or destroy uncomfortable feelings. It fuels the fire of Irritation and Hatred ($Dosa$).

Underneath all three lies Confusion ($Moha$)—forgetting that nothing permanent can be found in fleeting things. When you see this clearly, you simply stop pouring fuel onto the flames. The mind cools down into quiet, radiant stillness.

Sensual Craving & Greed

Kāma-Taṇhā & Lobha / Rāga

The compulsive impulse to pull in pleasant tastes, sights, comforts, and material possessions, mistaking fleeting pleasure for true peace.

Status Craving & Resistance

Bhava-Taṇhā & Dosa

The urge to build up self-importance and control, which turns into angry resistance and bitterness whenever things do not go our way.

Escape Craving & Confusion

Vibhava-Taṇhā & Moha

The urge to numb out, escape, or reject unpleasant realities, rooted in the fundamental confusion of how the mind works.

Living practice

  • When you feel a strong impulse to buy, scroll, or snack, pause for 10 seconds and ask: 'Is this true hunger, or is the fire of craving restless?'
  • When you feel annoyance rising, take 3 slow, deep breaths to let the heat of $Dosa$ cool before you speak.
  • Remind yourself: 'Peace does not come from satisfying every craving; peace comes from stepping out of the fire.'
