Conditioned Arising & Action

Paṭicca-samuppāda & Kamma

Dependent Origination ($Paṭiccasamuppāda$) details how ignorance and reactive habits perpetuate stress ($Saṃsāra$), while highlighting the exact contemplative pivot point (Feeling $Vedanā$ → Craving $Taṇhā$) where mindfulness breaks the chain.

Plain-English key

Dependent Origination is like a row of 12 falling dominoes. Ignorance knocks over Volition, which leads all the way to Stress. But here is the good news: **Domino #7 (Feeling Tone) does NOT have to knock over Domino #8 (Craving)**. When you notice a feeling with calm mindfulness instead of reacting, you pull out the domino and stop the whole chain of suffering!

Traveler, do not be intimidated by the twelve links of Dependent Origination. It is not an abstract puzzle, but the step-by-step blueprint of how stress arises in your mind right now—and how you can stop it.

At the foundation lies the universal rule of conditionality ($Idappaccayatā$): 'When this cause is present, that result arises. When this cause is removed, that result ceases.' Everything is a web of relationships.

Notice how the chain moves: When we are unaware of reality ($Avijjā$), our intentions ($Cetanā$) act with grasping, creating habits ($Kamma$). This shapes how our senses perceive the world, leading to sensory contact ($Phassa$) and immediate feeling tones ($Vedanā$).

Now comes the most important discovery of your entire practice: **The Breakpoint of Freedom**. When a pleasant or painful feeling arises ($Vedanā$), that is simply the natural result of having a human body. Even an awakened Buddha feels physical pain when injured! But what happens next is up to you.

If you react unconsciously, Feeling immediately ignites Craving ($Taṇhā$), Clinging ($Upādāna$), and the entire cascade of anxiety ($Dukkha$). But if you apply gentle, bare mindfulness ($Sati$) to the feeling ('Ah, this is an uncomfortable sensation; it is temporary and not me'), Craving fails to ignite! The chain breaks right there at Link 7 ➔ Link 8. The dominoes stop falling, and the heart enters the unshakeable freedom of $Nibbāna$.

Intention is Action

Cetanā Kamma

Karma is intention. Every conscious choice leaves a subtle groove or habit in your mind, shaping who you become tomorrow.

Specific Conditionality

Idappaccayatā

Suffering is not a permanent curse; it is a temporary recipe of conditions. Change the supporting conditions, and the result changes.

The Reverse Collapse of Stress

Paṭiloma Nirodha

When craving ceases, clinging ceases; when clinging ceases, stress ceases. The entire chain unravels into freedom.

Living practice

  • Catch physical sensations today at the moment of contact before your mind turns them into complaints or cravings.
  • Check your intention ($Cetanā$) before sending an important email: is it motivated by kindness or frustration?
  • During challenging times, remind yourself: 'This arose from conditions; when conditions change, this too will dissolve.'
