The Microcosmic Flash
Moment-to-Moment Citta-Vīthi Arising
Traveler, enter the particle accelerator of mind. Witness the 17 thought-moments of the Abhidhamma cognitive process, and discover the exact Javana flash where freedom is born.
Core insight
The life-span of a thought-process is seventeen thought-moments... in the Javana (impulsion) moments alone is karma actively generated. Abhidhammattha Saṅgaha • Citta-Vīthi Chapter & SN 12.61
- Every single sensory impression (seeing a face, hearing a sound) unfolds through an exact sequence of 17 thought-moments.
- Moments 1 to 8 are automatic passive perceptual registration.
- Moments 9 to 15 (**The 7 *Javana* Moments**) are the ONLY window where free choice and karma exist.

The High-Speed Camera of Mind
Traveler, Can You See a Single Millisecond?
When you watch a lightning strike across the night sky, your eyes perceive a continuous jagged beam of light.
Yet a high-speed physics camera reveals that the lightning is composed of seventeen micro-flashes occurring in fractions of a millisecond.
“Your mind is faster than lightning. What feels like an instantaneous 'I like this' or 'I hate this' is an orchestrated symphony of 17 thought-moments called a Citta-Vīthi.”
The Secret Doorway of the Seven Javanas:
For the first 8 thought-moments, your mind is merely receiving the sound wave and identifying the language. You have zero control over this passive reception.
Then, in moments 9 through 15, the spotlight turns on you. This is the $Javana$ (Impulsion) phase. In these 7 micro-moments, you choose whether to react with craving, hatred, or mindful peace. This is the birthplace of freedom.

The Micro-Gap of Awakening
When an insult or sudden noise occurs, notice that the initial shock (Moments 1–8) is inevitable. Do not fight it.
Instead, train your mindfulness to illuminate the $Javana$ window (Moments 9–15). With even a sliver of mindfulness present, the seven Javanas arise as wisdom and compassion (Amoha & Mettā) rather than explosive fury.
You become the master of the microsecond.
