The Six Destinies of Mind
Deva to Naraka: The Psychology of Realms
Traveler, explore the six psychological landscapes of consciousness: from the euphoric intoxication of the Deva Realm to the burning rage of the Hell Realm.
Core insight
There are these destinations, Sāriputta: hell, the animal realm, the realm of the hungry ghosts, human beings, and the gods. I understand each destination and the path that leads to it. Majjhima Nikāya 12 • Mahāsīhanāda Sutta
- The Six Realms ($Gatis$) are both macrocosmic rebirth planes and microcosmic psychological states visited daily.
- Every realm carries its specific spiritual trap: the gods are blinded by pleasure; the hungry ghosts by lack; the hell beings by hatred.
- The Human Realm is the supreme spiritual sweet spot: balanced between joy and sorrow, it is the only ground for liberation.

Traveler, Where Did Your Mind Travel Today?
You do not need to die to visit the Six Realms. You can travel through all six before lunchtime:
- The Deva Realm: You receive a big promotion, listen to beautiful music, and feel on top of the world, bathed in sweet complacency.
- The Asura Realm: You open social media, see someone else's success, and your chest tightens with envious competition: “Why did they get it instead of me?”
- The Human Realm: You sit quietly with a cup of tea, aware of both your joys and your vulnerabilities, choosing mindful kindness.
- The Animal Realm: You feel exhausted, numbly scrolling through your phone on pure autopilot, driven only by appetite and avoidance.
- The Hungry Ghost Realm: You crave reassurance or sugar, feeling an insatiable, dry emptiness that no amount of consumption can fill.
- The Hell Realm: An explosive argument erupts; your veins burn with furious hatred, creating a living prison of rage.
“The Six Realms are not distant galaxies. They are the six rooms of your own psychological mansion.”
