Anatomy of the Bhavacakra

The 4 Concentric Rings & The Grip of Yama

Traveler, step before the grand mirror of existence. Deconstruct the four concentric rings of the Wheel of Life, and see why the Lord of Impermanence holds all conditioned states in his jaws.

Core insight

Draw the twelvefold dependent origination in direct and reverse order... held by the Lord of Impermanence, with the Buddha standing outside the wheel pointing to the radiant moon of Nirvāṇa. Divyāvadāna • King Rudrāyaṇa & The Wheel of Life
  • The Bhavacakra is not a mythical curiosity, but an exact cartography of the human psyche.
  • The four concentric rings: The 3 Root Poisons (Hub), The Karmic Ascent/Descent, The 6 Psychological Realms, and The 12 Mnemonic Links (Rim).
  • Yama (Impermanence) holds the wheel to remind us: not even the highest heavenly bliss can escape the law of change.

The Palace Mirror & The Great Wheel

Traveler, Stand Before the Cosmic Mirror

Imagine walking into the central hall of an ancient sanctuary. Before you hangs a colossal circular mirror framed in dark obsidian.

When you gaze into it, you do not see a single face. You see the revolving panorama of all human feelings: moments of radiant joy, sudden sparks of bitter jealousy, periods of anxious striving, and deep quiet peace.

“This is the Bhavacakra (The Wheel of Becoming). It is not an external mythological painting; it is the mirror of your own mind.”

The Figure Who Holds the Wheel:

Look closely at the ferocious, dark slate deity holding the wheel with sharp fangs and powerful claws. In Western folklore, we might mistake this for a 'devil'.

In Buddhist wisdom, this is $Yama$, the Lord of Time and Impermanence. Yama is not evil; he is the impartial, compassionate truth of impermanence ($Anicca$). He holds the entire wheel—including the highest god realms—in his jaws to show that no conditioned experience can remain frozen forever.

The Golden Silhouette Outside the Wheel:

Look at the upper right sky. The Buddha stands serene and free, completely outside the revolving wheel, gently pointing his finger toward the silver-gold full moon. He is saying: “Traveler, do not fight the wheel. Step off it into the boundless stillness of Nirvāṇa.”

The 4 Concentric Rings Deconstructed

The Sacred Geometry of the $Bhavacakra$

The classical painting instructions (recorded in the Divyāvadāna and preserved in the Tibetan Sipa Khorlo) organize existence into four exact concentric zones:

  • [Zone 4 - Outer Rim]: 12 Links of Dependent Origination
    • [Zone 3 - Middle Field]: The 6 Realms of Rebirth
      • [Zone 2 - Intermediate Ring]: White Ascent & Dark Descent
        • [Zone 1 - Central Hub]: 3 Root Poisons (Boar, Rooster, Snake)

1. The Central Hub (The Engine)

At the absolute center are three animals chasing each other in a circle: the Black Boar ($Moha$), the Red Rooster ($Lobha$), and the Green Viper ($Dosa$). This is the battery that keeps the entire cosmic machine turning.

2. The Intermediate Ring (The Karmic Pathways)

Divided into two halves:

  • The Luminous White Path ($Sugaṭi$): Beings ascending upward toward clarity, guided by wholesome intentions ($Kusala$).
  • The Shadowed Dark Path ($Duggati$): Beings tumbling downward, pulled by heedless cravings and aversion.

3. The Middle Field (The Six Realms)

The psychological landscapes where consciousness takes birth: God Realm, Titan Realm, Human Realm, Animal Realm, Hungry Ghost Realm, and Hell Realm.

4. The Outer Rim (The 12 Links)

The twelvefold storyboard of $Paṭiccasamuppāda$ (Dvādaśāṅga), illustrating how ignorance blindly crafts our moment-to-moment reality.

Recognizing Yama's Touch

Reconciling with Transience

Traveler, whenever you feel sudden panic about losing youth, status, money, or a loved one, you are meeting Yama's gentle touch.

Do not look away in fear. Sit quietly, place a hand over your heart, and whisper: "This too is conditioned. This too is held by time. I do not demand that a flowing river turn to stone."

When you stop demanding permanence from impermanent things, peace enters your heart immediately.
